Attachment is the biggest curse of life. All our problems emanate from it. Self-attachment is nothing but ego, the deadliest of all attachments, which results in enslavement to power and wealth – the fundamental cause of all insecurity.

Attachment is difficult to get rid of, because it is like sticky tape. When you try to detach yourself from a person or thing, attachment binds you to someone or something else. Detachment is a gradual process. A forcible attempt at it is mere suppression of attachment, with the risk of attachment rebounding stronger than before.

Nature provides several examples of this phenomenon. The use of insecticides increases the immunity of insects, making them deadlier than before. Likewise, antibiotics administered to suppress disease lose their potency after a while. Tobacco addicts who quit smoking abruptly often get back to it with a vengeance. Or worse, they over-eatto satiate the desire suppressed by smoking. This often results in bingeing, leading to obesity.

Doctors must teach, rather than treat. Build immunity not through antibiotics and vitamins but by healthy living.

Attachment in a relationship is the ultimate challenge life can impose. It can make one very possessive and insecure. This often has repercussions that may be difficult to control or overcome. The insecurities of the mind assume control over the heart.

Worldly pressures often destroy the purity of love and lead to breakups. Fortunately, breakups can also be a solution, if done not against one another but with each other. By working as a team to gradually make one independent of the other. This is difficult and trying, and demands a disciplined mind and complete faith. The gradual process will keep the love alive as the process of detaching from one another unfolds.

Salvation is nothing but attaining the golden mean between the mind and the heart. It does away with the negativity in either, and leaves behind love, faith and discipline. Faith brings positivity, which makes the disciplined mind detach from the insecurities that consume most of your energy. This energy can be used for growth of character. This is nothing but elevating your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual self. You rise in love. This is the freedom we yearn for, of which happiness is a by-product.
